Do Sole Traders Need a Business Bank Account?

By Constantin · 2026-10-27 · 2 min read

It is one of the most common questions from people starting out, and the answer depends on how your business is set up.

Limited companies: yes

A limited company is a separate legal entity from you. Its money is not your money, so in practice it needs a bank account in the company's name. Mixing company and personal money causes problems with your accounts and tax.

Sole traders: not legally required, but usually worth it

As a sole trader, you and the business are legally the same person, so there is no legal requirement for a separate business account. You can run your business through a personal account.

There are good reasons not to, though:

What to compare before you open one

Monthly fees are only part of the cost. Compare:

  1. Transaction fees. Some accounts charge for each payment in or out, which adds up fast.
  2. Cash deposits. If you take cash, check where and how you can pay it in, and what it costs.
  3. Invoicing and receipts. Some accounts include invoicing, receipt capture and tax estimates.
  4. Accounting software links. Make sure the account connects to the software you or your accountant use.
  5. Extra cards. Useful if anyone else spends money for the business.
  6. Protection of deposits. Check whether your money is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) or held under different arrangements, especially with newer providers.
  7. Customer support. When a payment is stuck, you want a real person to help.

Getting set up

Opening a business account usually takes minutes to a few days with an app-based provider. You will normally need ID, your home address and basic details about what the business does. Once it is open:

The short version

Limited companies need a business account. Sole traders do not legally need one, but it usually saves time, avoids issues with your bank's terms, and makes tax and digital record keeping far simpler.

We are not financial advisers. Always check a provider's terms, fees and protections before opening an account.
